Public Wi-Fi Portals Need Session Timeouts

A traveler connected to airport Wi-Fi using an email account and then closed the browser without signing out. Hours later, another person using the same shared tablet reopened the portal and found the earlier session still active. The network had timed out, but the login page had not cleared its account state.

Public Wi-Fi portals are designed for convenience, yet they often combine network access with registration, advertising consent, or social-media login. On shared or borrowed devices, an unfinished session can reveal names, email addresses, travel details, or account connections.

Portals should close inactive sessions after a reasonable period and clearly display the countdown. When the network ends, the authentication page should also clear local session information. Users need a visible sign-out button that works without navigating through several promotional screens.

The timeout should match the setting. A hospital visitor may need longer access than someone checking a timetable at a station. Providers can allow users to reconnect easily without storing more personal data than necessary.

Shared-device warnings are also useful. If a login uses an external account, the portal can remind the user to sign out from that account separately. Kiosks and library tablets should automatically erase browser data after each session, but the portal should not assume every device has that protection.

Network operators need to test the entire exit process, not only the connection. A session that appears closed on one screen may remain active in a hidden tab or cached browser window.

Free internet should not leave a person’s identity behind after the connection ends. Automatic timeouts, clear sign-out controls, and limited data collection can preserve convenience while reducing the risk created by forgotten sessions on public devices.

The timeout policy should appear before login rather than only inside the terms of service.

Providers should also state how long registration details remain after the session ends.
